MEGA SHELTER PROTECTS CHILDREN FROM THE ELEMENTS

To build and install a shelter for a school playground.
Many schools are opting for shaded playground spaces to shelter children from the harsh New Zealand sun and provide cover in inclement weather. Shade canopies and sails are a cost effective option and are often seen in playgrounds, however they are generally not very large. At Tirimoana School in Glendene Auckland, the school were after a giant secure canopy that could double as an outdoor learning and play space. Novashades were commissioned to make the canopy and Manson Engineering were challenged with building the structure to hold the canopy in place.

Typically shade structures are made from a fabric top fitted over a framed unit and tensioned with galvanized wire. Due to the sheer size of the shelter at the school (12.6m x 26.5m) a strong frame was required to affix the shade cover. Located in West Auckland, the primary school is sheltered from the coast and it was felt a steel structure with galvanized coating would be adequate for the environmental conditions. The frame was made up of six arched structures with the shade canopy affixed to the curved roof line. The steel componenets making up the structure were made using as few as joins as possible to maintain the strength of the material. The steel componentry was hot dipped in galvanzing tanks to add a protective coating and reduce maintenance. The framing was delivered onsite and erected using cranes. The shelter has increased the play and learning area for the children during wet days and also provides shade against New Zealand’s harsh sun in the summer months. It is large enough to hold school assemblies and is used as an outdoor physical recreation classroom. Since this project Manson Engineering has developed a good working partnership with Novashades and has supplied support structures for several other projects.
